Scottsdale, Arizona – Decked out in his typical Sunday orange, Rickie Fowler claimed a long-awaited title at TPC Scottsdale on a bizarre, rainy Sunday afternoon in the desert. The 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open is known as the “greenest show on grass” referring to the sponsor’s effort to make the event 100% sustainable and zero waste. Rickie had always played well in Scottsdale, losing in a playoff in 2016 and also taking a runner-up finish in 2010. 2019 seemed to be Rickie’s year but not without a bit of drama.
Rickie held the 54-hole lead on Saturday night which turned into a 5-stroke by end of his 10th hole on Sunday. However, the 11th hole would be the start of a bizarre turn of events. Rickie chipped his 3rd shot into the par-4 11th green but ended up going long into the water hazard. He took a drop before watching the ball roll back into the hazard a second time. The rules official initially ruled it as a second penalty before correcting the mistake (under the new 2019 rules) on the next tee box. Rickie bogey-ed the par-3 12th hole, losing the lead to Brendan Grace. Fowler wasn’t done and he never gave up. With birdies at 15 and 17, he retook the lead and headed to 18 with a 2-shot lead. After safely escaping the church pew bunker and scrambling for a par, Rickie closed the door as the 2019 Waste Management Open champion.
This is Rickie Fowler’s 5th PGA Tour win and 9th win as a professional. The PGA Tour will head to Pebble Beach next week where Ted Potter Jr. is the defending champion at the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
